Dr Marien De Jonge

Position: Associate Professor, Head of the Laboratory of Medical Immunology
Role in CONSENSE: Supervisor ESR15

Continuous monitoring of inflammatory biomarkers at nanomolar to picomolar concentrations will have a significant impact on the diagnosis and treatment of severely ill patients, including patients with sepsis and inflammatory diseases. Our main goal in this project is to test the engineered biosensors in in vitro cell systems.

De Jonge is a passionate scientist with more than 15 years of experience in academic as well as in industrial R&D. Marien de Jonge’s main research interest is focused on understanding host-pathogen interactions and mucosal immune responses to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of viral and bacterial respiratory tract infections in children. He has extensive experience in the field of vaccine research and the development of diagnostics. He has been Head of the Laboratory of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Radboud University Medical Center for more than 5 years and recently became the head of the Laboratory of Medical Immunology. He is chair of the Royal Dutch Society for Microbiology since 2017.
De Jonge has a background in molecular microbiology, immunology and infectious diseases. He obtained a M.Sc. degree at the science faculty of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam and a PhD degree at the medical faculty of the University of Amsterdam. He was post-doctoral fellow for 2,5 years at Institut Pasteur in Paris in the group of Prof. Stewart Cole and worked as projectleader within the Vaccine R&D of Merck Sharpe and Dohme for 4,5 years, after which he became senior scientist and 1,5 years later head of the Laboratory of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Since 1st March 2021 he became the head of the Laboratory of Medical Immunology.
